WESTBROOK - Looking for any information on the Westbrooks family that was found in Amelia County and later in Charlotte County Va. In 1737,Charles, Phoebe and William witnessed a will. When it was presented to court only Charles and Phoebe were present, which may indicate that they were married. By 1782 tax list Lucy, Phoebe and Amos are listed. Is Amos the son of Charles or William. Is Phoebe the wife of Charles or WIlliam? Who is Lucy(wife of William maybe)?Amos' daughter Frances married William Palmore and named her sons TUCKER, BRANCH and WOODSON, so there may be a connection to any or all of these families. Elisha reportedly moved to Caswell County, North Carolina, sometime before 1800, and died there August 13, 1852. He was a son of Thomas Gunn III. I am looking for the names of Elisha's sons.He seems to be the best possibility of being the father of my ancestor, Dudley G. Gunn, also born in Amelia County,1785.Dudley died in Tennessee in 1867. Henry was a widower when he made his will in Nov. 1776 in Amelia Co. He was from Richmond Co. and his first three sons were born there. They are: George, William, and Dudley. His other children, possibly b. in Amelia were: Thomas, W. Alexander, Henry, Ann, who marr. Abner GREENWOOD, and had Martha GREENWOOD. Mary who marr. a READ and had dau. Polly. and the third dau. Elizabeth who marr.William HULL and had a son George HULL. Emparnell was the dau. of George HILL who also left a will in Amelia Co. that was probated on 23 Sept. 1773. He also was from Richmond Co. COLEMAN - I've been communicating with others interested in the Colemans of Amelia Co. I visited there this past year looking for clues as to whose William Coleman's ancestors were. I didn't make any headway at all. So far, I've encountered three different claims about where William came from. 1) Robert Coleman of Mobjack Bay, Gloucester Co. VA. William would be this Robert's grandson, i.e., the son of Robert's son, Joseph Coleman (m. Agnes Adleston). This claim was originally made in S. Bernard Coleman's book, "The Coleman Family Of Virginia." 2) William of Amelia is son of William of Charles City Co. VA who came there in 1656. Supposidly there were four brothers in Charles Co. at that time, Robert (got 813 acres of land from Lt. Col. Walter Chiles in Charles City Co. in 1852), Nicholas, Thomas and William. This is the view presented in J.P. Coleman's book, "The Robert Coleman Family, from Virginia to Texas." 3) William is son of a Robert Coleman of Henrico Co. I would appreciate any clues or data or thoughts you might have that could add to the on-going discussion. Hopefully, someday, the question of William's ancestry will be resolved conclusively. SELF, HAMM - Have hit a brick wall with my SELF/HAMM research. My g-g-g-g-grandfather, Thomas Self m. Oney Hamm. I have b.date for Thomas Self as June 2, 1759 though I've seen another date as well. Wife, Oney Hamm was born 1760 & died in Russell Co., VA. Her parents - Thomas & Sarah Hamm, g-parents - George & Suanna Hamm. Thomas Self was born in Northumberland Co., VA & was married in Amelia Co., VA. 3 children - Burwell, Elzenia (Seany) & James Mastin. My line descends from James Mastin Self. I'll be happy to share info. on this line & hope someone can add to this, specifically w/knowledge on parents of Thomas Self. A relative suggests possibility that court records were burned at this point, so I'm hoping to find someone with a family Bible or other verifying papers. A SELF researcher has suggested his parents might be William & Hannah Self, William being the son of John Self & Susannah Blincoe. HOOD, WILLS/WELLS, CROWDER - Seeking any info on Parmelia W. Hood and Gardner Hood who were ordered to be bound out by the overseer for the poor of District 4, Amelia Co., VA order book no. 29, page 196. Late 1820s, Parmelia W. Hood received 35 acres of land from Herod Tucker Crowder. Why? Herod died abt 1826. Was she a beneficiary? In 1831, a marriage contract was recorded by Parmelia W. Hood, her intended husband, Alexander Wills (Wells) of Dinwiddie County, VA with a John Wills of Amelia Co., Va as a third party re: the land referred to above. Were Parmelia W. and Gardner Hood, brother and sister? Who were their parents? Other siblings? Who were they bound to? Was a bond posted? Gardner Hood was in Halifax Co., NC by 1824. It would appear that Permelia W. Hood continued to own the land in Amelia Co., Va until 1852 butmay have resided in Dinwiddie County, VA after her marriage 2 April 1831 to Alexander Wills. I have a list of children said to be Griffin Jr's, John b 1783, William b 1786, Mary, Nancy W., Charles S., Corbin, Edgecomb S., and Lucy K. My interest is in Mary, she married William Raine in Campbell Co., VA Dec. 22, 1794. My earlier sources showed her father married to Lucy Sugget. But, do these dates make this unlikly? Was Griffin Jr., her brother or her father? I have seen many times that Griffin Lewis was full cousin to General George Washington. I have not been able to varify this information. I have found where George's sister (I believe, Betty) married a Lewis. I have heard reference to Geo. W's, Lewis nephews. But, I can't place the "full cousin" idea. POLLARD, CHAPMAN - Looking for info on the POLLARD family. My line is through Joseph Hill POLLARD born 1820 in Amelia Co., VA. By 1850, he, his mother, and brothers were listed on the Adair Co., KY census. Believe the mother's name was Mahala CHAPMAN, her husband was not listed. DAVIDSON, HOLLOWAY, HUNTER, ENOCHS, BOATMAN, CHRISMAN, HEMPHILL, DICKINSON - Researching family of Daniel DAVIDSON, B. in Va. in 1786, married Mary ENOCHS from Rowan County N.C. daughter of Thomas ENOCHS and Nancy BRYAN of Rowan County, N.C. and Oldham County, Ky. Daniel and Mary appear in the 1810 census of Jefferson Co. Ky. with a boy and two girls under the age of 10. His wife Mary was born in 1790. In 1817 they sold their land in the Louisville area and moved to Carlisle, Sullivan County, Indiana where they settled and reared a family of 10 children. A relative of Daniels was George Davidson, John Davidson and William Davidson. These three appear in the Fayette Co. Ky and Jessamine Co. Ky. land records in the 1794 to 1815 time frame. George Davidson died in Jessamine County, Ky. and his oldest child, Richard, brought 5 infant brothers and sisters to Carlisle where they settled on an adjoining farm to Daniel Davidson and Mary Enochs Davidson. Daniel Davidson was my gr.gr. grandfather and I have been trying to sort out who his parents were for 37 years. The courthouse in Sullivan burned and the Davidson cemetery was destroyed. Any help any one can give me will be appreciated. Other family names intermarrying and witnessing deeds were Jacob Holloway, Martin Dickinson, Hugh Chrisman and Robert Boatman. Do not know how these names share a relationship but they were witnessing each others land transactions through this time frame. One important name was John Hunter as George Davidson and John Hunter bought land together and their children intermarried. Mary Davidson Pielemeier 4513 Lockerbie Court, Carmel, Indiana 46033.

The will left property to her "dafter" Mary, wife of John Willis. I believe this Jasper to be the ancestor of my ancestor, Jasper Pillow of Amelia County, VA who married someone named Mary and had children William b. 1739; John b. abt 1745; and Jasper, Jr. b. Feb. 11, 1760.

RAINEY/RANY/RANEY, ROTTENBERRY/ROTTENBURY/RITTENBERRY - Francis RANEY/RANY/RAINEY, was granted 200 acres of land on Middle Fork of Deep Creek in what was Prince George Co. in 1733, in 1735 this land became Amelia Co. Deed Book Five, p361 lists same and lists wife Ann. The origional land grant lists Francis as son of Roger. Is this the same Francis Raney (wife Ann Rottenberry) who is in Mecklenburg Co in 1768/9 buying 400 acres of land (apparently from the estate of John Rottenberry). We are trying to run down the parents of Frnacis Raney of Mecklenburg Co. Any help would be appreciated. Richard Rainey

LORTON, MOSS, MARTIN - I am looking for the Thomas LORTON family. Thomas was married to Elizabeth MOSS. Thomas was born in 1724 and married Elizabeth MOSS on June 3 1745 in Amelia County Virginia. Elizabeth MOSS was born in 1728 in Amelia County Virginia. Elizabeth MOSS's parents are William MOSS and Elizabeth MARTIN. JOHNSON, HAWKINS - I am a descendant of Ro(w)land JOHNSON (b. 1758 in Amelia County) and his sister, Susan "Suckey" JOHNSON (b. 1760 possibly in Amelia County) as well as Joshua HAWKINS (b.1753 possibly in Lunenburg County) and his sister Millie HAWKINS (b. before 1765 also possibly in Lunenburg County). Joshua married "Suckey" in early 1780 in Lunenburg County by a Rev. James Shelbin and witnessed by Ro(w)land, who previously married Millie, time and place uncertain. Ro(w)land served in the Revolutionary War, initially entering ~10 January 1781 in Lunenburg County, Virginia under a Capt. Frank Degraffenreiel(sp), later joining a regiment in Petersburg under Col. Merryweather and Maj. Cloman(sp); was discharged and later re-entered in July 1781 under Capt. Robertson, Maj. Street(sp.?Strict) and Col. Stokes, subsequently assigned to a regiment under the command of Col. Campbell and involved in the siege of Yorktown. He was discharged after Cornwallis's surrender and returned to Lunenburg County. Joshua served as a private in the Capt. James Johnson's company of Col. Mordecai Buckner's 6th Regiment Virginia Line; severely wounded and captured during the battle of Brandywine and taken prisoner for 2 years. Released 10 February 1778. Both families moved, probably together, to Spartanburg, S.C. about 1783. Their grandchildren, Hamilton JOHNSON and Millberry HAWKINS married and it is from them that I am tied into all of this. I am attempting to find Ro(w)land's parents and lineage as I have been fortunate to trace the Hawkins's line to 1400s England. If you can help, it would be appreciated. Neal Johnson

DRINKARD - I received the following information from a fellow DRINKARD researcher and I am trying to find out any information about this: "1767 VA - Amelia Co, VA Court Records, ca 1767, Book 10, pg. 111 - Francis Drinkard was guardian of Tabitha Standley, infant orphan of Dancy Stanley, deceased; also named guardian of Wright Standley." The information I have states that Tabitha Stanley Drinkard was not born until 1775. The date above is 1767. Also, I was told that she was given the middle name (Stanley) of her grandmother, the wife of Francis Drinkard, Sr., Ann Stanley.
